Lugol's Iodine (for MIBG scan) - Side Effects, Precautions, and Contraindications

What side effects can Lugol's Iodine (for MIBG scan) cause?

​Common side effects include:

  • Nausea, vomiting, stomach discomfort
  • Diarrhoea
  • Metallic taste, burning or pain in the mouth, increased salivation

Rare but serious side effects include:

  • Severe abdominal pain
  • Severe nausea, vomiting or diarrhoea

The symptoms of a drug allergy include one or more of the following:

  • Swollen face, eyes, lip, tongue
  • Difficulty in breathing
  • Itchy skin rashes over your whole body

If you experience any of these symptoms, you should stop your medication and see your healthcare professional immediately.

Before taking Lugol's Iodine (for MIBG scan) , what precautions must I follow?

​Inform your healthcare professional if:

  • You are allergic to potassium iodide, iodine or any of the other ingredients of this medication
  • You are pregnant, or planning to become pregnant or breastfeeding
  • You have severe problems with your kidneys
  • You are taking any other medications, including supplements, traditional medications and herbal remedies

What food or medicine must I avoid when I take Lugol's Iodine (for MIBG scan) ?

​Some medications should also be avoided prior to MIBG scan. These include amlodipine, nifedipine, salbutamol, oxymetazoline, pseudoephedrine, promethazine, tramadol, caffeine, and certain antipsychotics.
