Related: Famotidine, gastro-oesophageal reflux disease, acid reflux, ulcer. What Medicine is used for: Famotidine works by reducing the amount of acid produced in the stomach. It is used to treat various conditions of the gastrointestinal (stomach and intestines) tract including: Gastro-oesophageal reflux disease (a condition where the acid from the stomach goes back up the food tube and throat, causing pain and a burning sensation known as heartburn)Ulcers of the gastrointestinal tract (treatment and prevention)
Related: FAQs on Biologics and Biosimilars. What Medicine is used for: Introduction Your doctor is considering a "biologic" or "biosimilar" to treat your condition. Do not be alarmed by the term. It simply means the medicine is derived from animal or human proteins and not from chemical substances. They reduce uncontrolled immune reaction and inflammation in your joints, skin, muscles and gut. In turn, lessen symptoms, improve outcomes and quality of life. Biologics are very expensive because of the high cost of inventing, manufacturing and studying them, therefore biosimilars (generic equivalent of biologics) can be marketed once the patent on the original biologic has expired. Biosimilars are cheaper, yet comparable in terms of quality, safety and efficacy to their version of an approved biologics.
How do biologics and biosimilars work? Biologics and biosimilars target specific parts of the immune system. It can block actions of specific type of immune cell such as white blood cells called T-cell or B-cell. It can also block proteins in the immune system such as tumour necrosis factor-alpha (TNF-alpha), interleukin (IL) 17-A, IL-12, IL-23, IL-6, interferon and CD-20 (protein found on B-cell). These cells or proteins are known to be involved in the inflammation process of various medical conditions. Related: Febuxostat, Xanthine Oxidase Inhibitor. What Medicine is used for: Febuxostat belongs to a class of medicines called xanthine oxidase inhibitor which lower uric acid (also called urate) levels in the blood. The other xanthine oxidase inhibitor is allopurinol. Usually you are prescribed Febuxostat if allopurinol is unsuitable for you. When the uric acid builds up in the blood and becomes too high, urate crystals may form in and around the joints (such as big toe joints, ankles, elbows). These crystals irritate the tissues and cause sudden, severe pain, redness, warmth and swelling in a joint, commonly known as a gout flare or attack. Left untreated, larger deposits called tophi may form in and around joints. These tophi may cause joint and bone damage.
Febuxostat is used for reducing uric acid levels, stopping crystal formation and dissolving crystal for excretion. Over time, it reduces gout flare and associated symptoms. Keeping uric acid levels sufficiently low for a long enough period can also shrink tophi.
Brand/Proprietary Drug Name: Plendil Related: felodipin stada, Plendil, felodipine. What Medicine is used for: Felodipine lowers your blood pressure by relaxing and widening blood vessels.
Related: cholesterol, hyperlipidemia, hyperlipidaemia, dyslipidemia, dyslipidaemia, hypercholesterolemia, hypertriglyceridemia, fenofibrate, trolip, fenosup, lipanthyl, trilipix. What Medicine is used for: Fenofibrate belong to the class of medications called fibrates. Fibrates work by speeding the natural processes that remove cholesterol from the body. They lower the amount of 'bad cholesterol' (low density lipoprotein or LDL-cholesterol) and 'fat' (triglyceride) as well as increase the amount of 'good cholesterol' (high density lipoprotein or HDL-cholesterol) in the blood. High 'bad cholesterol' levels can cause your blood vessels to clog up and lead to chest pain (angina), heart attack or stroke. Hence, this medication may reduce your risk for heart attack and stroke.
Brand/Proprietary Drug Name: Berodual N Related: Fenoterol, Ipratropium, Berodual N, metered dose inhaler, asthma, COPD. What Medicine is used for: Berodual N is used for the treatment of chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD). COPD is a disease affecting the lungs which makes it harder for the person to breathe as the disease gets worse. Berodual N can also be used to help control symptoms in asthma. It contains 2 ingredients, fenoterol and ipratropium. Both ingredients work by relaxing the airway muscles, thus opening up the airways to make breathing easier.
What Medicine is used for: Fentanyl patch is a medication used for the relief of chronic pain. The patch contains a reservoir of the medicine that is slowly released to provide round the clock pain control.
Related: ferinject, ferric carboxymaltose, iron injection, iron deficiency anemia. What Medicine is used for: Ferric Carboxymaltose is an injection that is used to treat anemia caused by low iron levels. Anemia occurs when levels of red blood cells in the body are lower than normal. It supplies the body with iron in order to make red blood cells, which are used to transport oxygen around the body. This can help you to feel less tired or breathless, and improve your ability to exercise. Your doctor will perform a blood test to check whether you need Ferric Carboxymaltose.
Brand/Proprietary Drug Name: Sangobion What Medicine is used for: These preparations contain multivitamins with iron. Iron is needed to produce red blood cells to replenish the blood loss during delivery.
What Medicine is used for: Clomiphene or Letrozole are used as fertility medications in some women who are unable to become pregnant. They work by changing the hormone balance of the body, causing ovulation to occur and thus prepares the body for conception.
