Caring for her today means protecting her health for tomorrow

This May, in the spirit of Mother's Day, we pause to celebrate the strength and grace of the women who have raised, guided and inspired us—our mothers, grandmothers and sisters. They are often the caregivers, and the quiet pillars of strength in our families and communities. This month is a timely reminder that caring for them can start with something simple yet powerful, starting with encouraging them to prioritise their health.
A Preventable Cancer Within Our Control

In Singapore, cervical cancer remains a concern and is the tenth most common cancer among women. Cervical cancer develops in the cervix, the lower part of the uterus (womb) that connects to the vagina. It typically develops slowly over time and is most commonly caused by a persistent infection with the Human Papilloma Virus (HPV).
The good news? Cervical cancer is also among the most preventable cancers today. Through HPV vaccination to reduce infection risk and regular screening to detect early cellular changes, cancer can be treated and prevented before it even starts. Despite this, far too many women are still missing their vital screenings.
Why Screening Matters Even Without Symptoms
According to the National Population Health Survey (2024), only 44.9% of women aged 25 to 74 are up to date with cervical cancer screening, a decline from 57.9% in 2007.
Don’t wait for symptoms to act. A common misconception is that feeling healthy means you are safe, but early-stage cervical cancer is frequently asymptomatic. Screening is a proactive preventive step that empowers everyone to take charge of their health. Waiting for symptoms often means waiting too long—don't miss the window where early detection is most effective.
Available, Accessible, Vital: Get Screened Today
Screening matters – don’t let accessibility stand in the way. Beyond specialist clinics, cervical cancer screening is also available at most primary care providers, including SingHealth Polyclinics. Under the Healthier SG programme, eligible women in Singapore aged 40 and above can enjoy special subsidies for cervical cancer screening at their enrolled clinic. Cervical cancer screening is recommended for women aged 25 and above who have ever been sexually active:
