“Just two months before my wedding, I was diagnosed with Type 1 diabetes. It was very tough coming to terms with the fact that I would have to live with insulin injections every day of my life.
I was only 27 and not content to accept this passively, so I read as much as I could about diabetes and made lifestyle changes. With my endocrinologist’s encouragement, I formed a home-based diabetes support group in 1991. It later became TOUCH Diabetes Support, one of the earliest services of TOUCH Community Services.
Apart from addressing the psychosocial and emotional needs of members, I also train volunteers to provide care and support for newly diagnosed members.
I am glad that our members have found courage to speak up about their journey with diabetes. Many of them have also become active volunteers, turning from recipients to givers, to journey with those struggling to accept their condition.”
