SUPPORT FOR PATIENTS

In addition to attending to patients' medical needs, SingHealth Polyclinics also places much emphasis on the emotional needs of patients. With that in mind, we have set up support groups for patients with diabetes and asthma.

Diabetic Support Groups

The SingHealth Polyclinics Diabetic Support Group was established to bring together adults living with diabetes. There are currently over 200 diabetic support group members.




   Objectives of the Diabetic Support Group:

  1. To increase patients' knowledge on diabetes;
  2. For members to meet and share their experiences, ideas and provide mutual support;
  3. For members and caregivers to motivate and encourage each other so that they can cope confidently and self-manage their conditions; and
  4. The objectives of the Malay Diabetic Support Group are to support, educate and enable Malay patients to develop day-to-day coping strategies in managing their condition during Ramadan and other occasions.
Activities of the Support Group:

  1. Health education talks by doctors and other healthcare professionals.
  2. Group meetings to promote fellowship among members, caregivers, nurses and other healthcare professionals.
  3. Healthy cooking and exercise activities by members, nurses and other healthcare professionals.

Asthma Support Groups

SingHealth Polyclinics started her first Asthma Support Group at Pasir Ris Polyclinic in 2004. To date, all nine polyclinics organise their own support group sessions.




   Objectives of the Asthma Support Group:

  1. To provide a platform for members to meet and share their experiences, ideas and provide mutual support.
  2. To educate asthmatic patients as well as parents and caregivers of asthmatic children on the chronic condition, common triggers of asthma, ways of controlling of asthma and other critical information.

Activities of the Support Group:

  1. Health education talks by doctors and other healthcare professionals.
  2. Activities to equip patients, parents and caregivers with the knowledge and skills to prevent asthma attacks (e.g. mattress sanitisation demonstration).

Social Services 

Medical Social Workers are available to assist patients with their concerns, as well as recommend appropriate solutions for them. Consultation or counselling with a Medical Social Worker can be arranged at any of our SingHealth Polyclinics. Patients are welcome to approach our staff for details.
